J-Gates are great, even if they’re connected to terrible, terrible transmissions.

It looks cool, but it's bad.

Counterpoint - No. Just kidding, I don’t know anything about their excellent or not.

Also, whatever:

But it isn’t! It isn’t a manual, but it’s a very intuitive way to tell a car “hey, I’m doing 40 now, but I’m merging into the interstate, so do what you want with first and second, but don’t you dare shift above third.”

The ZF 6hp26 in my dad’s X350 was both reliable and excellent in operation IMHO.

That’s true. I have an X308 with the 5HP24, so sometimes I forget that not everyone is doomed to making a choice between replacing, rebuilding, or junking.

It’s like a Hurst but different!

I suspect “it’s like an X but different” is how Jag engineers started most of their pitches.

I see an exposed fastener.

Speaking of Jaguar; what the fuck is going on here?

I never found it to be all that great. It coulda been, with a single detent on the left side of the shifter pattern, but without that, you just don’t have solid haptic confirmation that you hit the gate you wanted.

That’s actually a manual release for the shifter so the car can be shifted into neutral in the case of a gearbox failure. I'll leave it to you to decide if that's actually better or not.

I don’t know, but I need it. It’s like an estate wagon with less utility than a sedan.

It’s the most pointless modification I’ve ever seen. And, it’s magnificent.

I can see that. In my case, I never use second anyway, so it's usually just shifting down into fourth or maybe third, so it isn't really an issue.

no its an exposed fastener

To be fair, I dd a manual and have a generic hatred of nearly all automatics(only exception so far is a 335i w/8hp and shift paddles, which I only slightly disliked). My mother has a XJ8 with the J-gate in it, so its not like its my usual ride. If I was forced to drive it more often I might have managed to shift to 3rd without needing to look at it.

Are we talking about the same thing?
The star thing is the gear release and the dot just above is a tiny speaker.
